(Class size
1 instructor per 10 students. Class size limit maximum
25)
Prerequisites (Lifeguard Candidate must be able to)
-
Provide
verification of the minimum age requirement of 15
years using a driver's license, birth certificate or
passport only.
-
Swim 500
yards continuously, 200 yards of which must be front
crawl with rhythmic breathing to the side, 100 yards
of which must be breaststroke and 200 yards of which
must be either front crawl with rhythmic breathing
to the side or breaststroke or a combination of the
two strokes.
-
Swim 20
yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet,
retrieve a 10 pound brick, swim 20 yards back to the
starting point and tread water with the brick, with
the face above water for 10 minutes.

This program
is designed to guide youth into the American Red Cross
Lifeguard Training program by building a foundation of
knowledge, attitudes and skill in future lifeguards.
Participation in this course complete several
requirements for Scouting Projects.
This program
offers comprehensive content in these five critical
areas:

Prevention: Prevent drowning and diving accidents

Fitness:
Develop swimming skills and more
-
Response: Understand the basics of emergency
response techniques and life guarding skills.

Leadership: Learn decision-making and communication
skills needed to succeed as a lifeguard.

Professionalism: Learn the skills necessary to
prepare for the important and vital work of life
guarding.

This
course is for ages 15 and older and combines lectures,
demonstrations and videos with hands-on training and
practice. Participants in this course learn to
recognize and respond to emergencies including shock,
cardiac and breathing emergencies for adults, children
and infants, heat and cold emergencies, sudden illnesses
and poisonings. Additionally, participants will learn
first aid for everything from cuts and scrapes to
muscle, bone and joint injuries.

This
course is for ages 17 and older with the ability to
perform the following water skills: wading assist,
spinal injury stabilization in shallow water using head
splint, throwing assist, reaching assist, retrieving a
10 pound brick from 7 feet of water. The ability to
demonstrate American Red Cross Level VI swimming skills
as follows: 50 yards each of the front crawl, back
crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke,
10 yards butterfly and standing front diver from the
deck.
Whether
you want to splash around with kids and teach them to
swim, help children or adults refine their strokes or
teach diving safety techniques, you can do it as an
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.
